Updates on Common Core and Parent Climate Survey

Greetings CHS Families,

We are almost done with the first half of the school year. Before going into the Winter Break, I’d like to inform you about the upcoming Parent Climate Survey. You will be receiving a mini survey about ‘how we are doing’ via email – it is also linked here. Please print and fill it out and send it addressed to Parent Facilitator back to school. It is important for us to understand where we are at in terms of communication between parents and school and how the parents would like to support the school activities. If you have any problems accessing the survey online or printing please contact me.

I’m attaching a parent packet – here, put together by the Office and Parent and Family Engagement. It is a handbook of parent’s rights, tips on how to help your child and conduct business with the school. It is a useful tool, so please read it through and refer to it when you need it.

Last but not least, I’ve attended the meeting with the Commissioner John King and Regent Chancellor Emeritus Robert Bennet on Common Core Standards. What I have taken back from that meeting is as follows;
– The number of tests our kids are taking did not change by the new Common Core Standards
– Some school districts have started implementing these standards much earlier than others, so every school district is at a different pace
– The need for more rigorous and real life content base education has been accepted by teachers, parents, administrators, employers and lawmakers.
– Local districts are free to choose their reading lists and problem sets etc.
– Schools with high number of English Language Learner students will offer state tests in native languages
– Everyone agrees that there is much needed on task training.
– None of the student data will be sold to third parties.
– The main goal of Common Core Standards is to educate students to the level of college and career readiness.

If you need more information or have questions on Common Core Standards, please contact me. A list of frequently asked questions is attached here –CCLS_FAQ
Wishing you all Happy Holidays!
